Power Mac G5 Memory Upgrades
Apple makes performing Power Mac G5 memory upgrades very simple. As with upgrades for all Macintosh computers, make certain before you install any memory module that the module will be compatible with your system. Macintosh is very specific about the types of RAM that can be used for PowerMac G5 memory upgrades.
The G5 uses DDR SDRAM. It comes with at least 256MB, but to maximize the computer's potential you will definitely want more. Additional memory should be installed in pairs and must conform to the JEDEC standard. All G5 RAM should be at least PC2700/184-pin modules that do not use Error Correcting Code, though some G5s require PC3200.
Installing Power Mac G5 Memory Upgrades
To install Power Mac G5 memory upgrades, first remove the side panel, the air deflector, and fan assembly. The DIMM slots are located at the front of the unit and should already contain at least two memory modules. When adding memory, one memory module must be placed in the top bank of DIMM slots while the second, identical memory module should be placed in the bottom bank of memory slots. New memory should be inserted in the empty slots closest to the center area between the two memory slot banks.
On the side of each DIMM slot you will find "ejectors" that must be pressed out before inserting the memory module. Use a firm, steady hand to press the modules into the DIMM slots until those "ejectors" snap closed. If a module resists insertion, make sure that its connectors are lined up and that it is being inserted straight down into its DIMM slot.
