PowerBook G4 Memory Upgrades

Adding your own PowerBook G4 memory upgrades is almost as easy as turning on your computer. While Apple recommends that you use a certified technician whenever installing new parts, if you know your way around a computer you should have no trouble adding memory on your own. The key is choosing the right memory and grounding yourself before opening up your notebook.

The PowerBook G4 uses DDR SDRAM in the DDR SO-DIMM format. Memory module sizes can be anywhere from 256 MB to 1 GB. If both memory slots in the PowerBook are filled, the maximum amount of RAM that can be added to the G4 notebook is 2 GB.

Grounding Yourself Before Installing PowerBook G4 Memory Upgrades

It is always a good idea to wear an anti-static wrist band whenever operating inside your PC. You should also make sure that all cords are unplugged from your laptop and the battery has been removed. Even a small electric charge can ruin the G4 processor or a memory card.

To install PowerBook G4 memory upgrades, unscrew the memory door on the bottom of the computer and remove it. Insert the new memory card at a 30-degree angle and press it in until it fits snugly and the metal connectors on the module are no longer visible. Rotate the module down so that it lies flat and snaps into place, then replace the memory door and reboot. The entire process shouldn't take more than five minutes.
