PC66 SDRAM
PC66 SDRAM derives its name from the fact that it is rated for 66 MHz bus operation. JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) set the standards for SDRAM. PC66 SDRAM utilizes "dual-bank architecture" in conjunction with several burst mode accesses that allow it to operate at speeds that far exceed those reached by FPM DRAM. While it is not the fastest RAM on the market, it is the best way to optimize your system performance if you have a 66 MHz bus computer.
PC66 SDRAM should be used on systems that have frontside busses rated at 66MHz. The processor can then be kept in synch with the RAM, which increases the number of instructions that the processor can perform in a given period of time. If you're not sure what type of RAM to use, consult your computer manual.
Why Buy PC66 SDRAM?
If your older computer is not performing as well as you'd like, find out if PC66 RAM is compatible with your motherboard. RAM is the portion of the computer's memory that can be accessed quickly. The storage-based memory in a computer, which is everything stored on the hard drive, operates at a relatively slow speed. RAM, on the other hand, can read and write data very quickly.
When a computer starts up a program, it places the portions of that program that are critical to its operation into RAM. Other components of the program (the components that are less critical) will be moved over as needed. If the RAM fills up, something must be deleted from RAM before the computer can continue or data must be sent to virtual memory. When this occurs, drops in performance also occur. It is for this very reason that generally the more RAM a computer has, the better it performs.
