Installing Desktop Memory

Installing desktop memory is incredibly simple. Today's manufacturers build motherboards with upgrading in mind. As long as you are careful and take appropriate anti-static precautions you should have no trouble at all.

Before installing any memory, it is important to turn off the computer and put on an anti-static wristband. Static charges can fry a piece of memory or a microprocessor, so wearing the anti-static wristband is an absolute must. You could also use an anti-static mat, but a wristband usually gets the job done.

Keys to Installing Desktop Memory

With the anti-static precautions out of the way, installing desktop memory is simply a matter of alignment. With the computer open, you should be able to notice a notch in the DIMM circuit board where the memory and the DIMM will connect. This notch will have a corresponding bump on the memory card that is used to make sure the alignment is correct.

With the card and the DIMM in alignment, simply push straight down. (If there are locking clips on the DIMM, make sure they are pushed out!) As you push down, you should feel the memory snap into place. Be careful not to push too hard! If the module is resisting, check to make sure the alignment is correct. It is not uncommon to have difficulty installing a memory module only to realize that it is being installed backwards.
